About jawzjan

Jawzjan Province is situated in the Northern part of Afghanistan, bordering Turkmenistan in the north, Balkh Province in the east, Sar-e Pol Province in the south and Faryab Province in the west. The province covers an area of 14660km2. More than one quarter of the province is mountainous or semi mountainous terrain (29.4%) while more than two thirds of the area is made up of flat land (68.9%).

The population of the province is estimated around 470.000 people.The major ethnic groups living in Jawzjan are Uzbeks and Turkmens followed by Tajiks, Pashtuns and Arabs.

Jawzjan has 10 districts which are Aqch, Mordian, Faizabad, Khanaqah, Mengajik, Khamab, Qarqeen, QoshTepa, Darzab and KhowjaDoko. Shibirghan is the capital of the province.

The old name of Jawzjan had been Goozganan, on the kingdom era of legendary Kingsand the author of HododolAlam (year 372 Hijri) in his book mentioned about the biggest city of Khorasan, Goozganan" it is a city located in Khorasan, with beautiful grand land and justice and honesty is governing it. It is surrounded from the east by Balkh and Takharistan to Bamyan, from south to end of Ghoor edge, from west toGhurjestan and Marwa era and from North to Jaihoon.

As well, the author of EshkalulAlam, 4rth Century Hijri scholar, said in his book about Jawzjan“it is a place in which cities such as Jewish (Judaism), Shibirghan, EstalkhKandram, Anbar and Asan are located. And according to HiwanTusengSiyah a famous Chinese scholar said about Jawzan in his Chinese language Hosh kin"

Jawzjan is also one of the most famous industrial provinces of Afghanistan with having large number of population. In addition to having wide agricultural territory, its natural jungles, mines of gas and oil, and precious stones have a great impact on the economy of the country. Before civil war, 46 % of Afghanistan income budget was from Jawzjan Gas and Oil mines. Also Jawzjan’s historical agricultural and industrial products and handicrafts such as carpet waving (aqcha carpet), tanned peels, peel of qaraqul ships, and other handicrafts products are exported worldwide to foreign countries.

Jawzjan‘s climate is equivalent to northern weather of the country which is normal, but it seriously lacks of drinking and agricultural water because all its water is mountainous which is coming through sar-e-pul and Balkh rivers, when the year is drought, the water disappears from river, which results suffering and serious damage to agriculture and economy of the community.

The agricultural area of Jawzjan is 215753 hectare land of which 40000 hectare is dry land. Different seeds are cultivated and fruits such as wheat; corn (maize), Pumpkin, sorghum, water melon, melon, almond, mint, grape, barely, flax, sesame, cotton, chickpea, gram, mange bean and black salsify. And also pistachio jungles which are mostly located in Darzab district are estimated 1000 hectare land.And also in Jawzjannatural herbs grow along Amor River which islicorice, devils hinge. In Shibirghan city, Jungle Bagh the only entertainment garden about 400 jerebs of land made 63 years ago is an example of agricultural and green landing in this area.

It is worth to mention about TelaTepe which is located 5 km to the north of Shibirghan city of Jawzjan province and until now more 22000 pieces of ancient archeological golden materials were found (google) .

Jawzjan is located in the northern part of the country, it is surrounded from north by Republic of Turkmenistan, from northeast by Uzbekistan, from east by Balkh province, from south by Sar-e-pul province, from southeast by Faryab province and its total area is 14660 KM2.

Jawzjan province has 10 districts such Aqcha, Faizabad, Murdian, Mengajik, Qarqeen, Khamab, Qoshtepa, Darzab and KhojaDoko, and shibiighan is its capital city. It has total 304 villages, and its population is about 426987 and different tribes such as Uzbiks, Turkmen, Pashtoon, Tajik and other smaller tribes live in this province.
